Beetle for Abigail - Nipus biplagiatus

Beetle for Abigail - Nipus biplagiatus
Long Beach, Los Angeles County, California, USA
June 11, 2012
Size: 1mm
The smallest lady beetles I've ever seen; very elongate, several found on Sycamore bark, apparently predatory on Sycamore scales(?) which are just about the only thing on the tree that were smaller than it. I think genus Nipus might be the right direction, but its poorly represented in the guide. Any insight?

Nipus biplagiatus - great find!
This is the only CA species of Nipus that has maculate elytra. A similar species, N. occiduus, is not known from CA (apparently restricted to Utah and Arizona). I really like the great look we get at the narrow, elongated head in your photos.

super... 3 spp. in Cali; this one looks like biplagiatus
