Pamphiliidae
ok for Acantholyda erythrocephala (L.), female. I didn't know this was found as far west as Alberta.

Red-headed Pine Sawfly, not
Hi Dave,

Thanks for the confirmation. I've been very slack about sawflies this year, but couldn't pass up on this one. Apparently they first showed up in Edmonton in 1989, but something is keeping them at very low levels and outbreaks are rare.

PS - Is the 'Red-headed Pine Sawfly' named for the head capsule of the larva?

Cheers,

Dave

Hi Dave,
This one is called the pine false webworm, or something like that. The redheaded pine sawfly, referring to Neodiprion lecontei, is named for the red head of the larva.
Hope you get back to some sawflies again soon!
Dave
