Beetle Identification needed - Prionus laticollis

Beetle Identification needed - Prionus laticollis
West Greenwich, Kent County, Rhode Island, USA
June 15, 2012
Size: 1 3/4 - 2"
Found this beetle in my yard. Took a picture next to my keys for size reference. It was doing a head stand with a long "thing" out of it's back end and when touched it went to a more normal position. Any idea what it is and what it was doing? Second picture is how I originally found it.

This just in....
Beetle steals car keys, absconds with vehicle. Film at eleven....:-)

This is a female Prionus root borer. She is "calling" males by extruding a gland (and her ovipositor) from the tip of her abdomen. She can't sting, but keep away from the other end. They chew their way out of trees to emerge, so that should tell you something :-)
