Thank you for the ID. I'm not sure whether it's worth keeping but I moved it because it seems to be the first one from FL.

"approx. 8 mm" --what the margin of error is?

Tough question
I'd say (8+-2)mm is on the safe side. I always write "approx." because I do not measure.

thanks; if you do not measure...
...i would humbly suggest leaving the size field blank: size differences of diagnostic relevance are usually of the order of 0.1 mm

Thank you!
Okay. I'll leave it blank from now on.

Maybe leave blank for smaller spp
but not for larger ones, as 2mm isn't going to matter much for larger spp. Also, even an approximate size, as long as noted as such, may be useful.

Okay
Hi David, I've started to put size information under "Remarks" if it is based on a guess (emphasizing that it's only a guesstimate). I agree with you that it's a question of relative error rather than absolute value. I wonder how people measure their specimens without collecting them. Perhaps one could take a separate "calibration photo" using a little ruler (same focus etc.) but it sounds like a lot of work. ~Oliver
