Golden Deer Fly - Silvius gigantulus - female

Golden Deer Fly - Silvius gigantulus - Female
North of Johnsondale, west of the Kern River, Sequoia National Forest, Tulare County, California, USA
June 9, 2010
Identified as Silvius gigantulus using Middlekauff(1) and web resources. Must be a female, as is was trying to feed on me. (Males feed on nectar and other plant exudates.) They slice the skin with their knife-like maxilla and then lap at blood flowing from the incision. (Didn't get me this time.)
