Colias? - Colias eurytheme - male

Colias? - Colias eurytheme - Male
Cedar Rapids/ICNC, Linn County, Iowa, USA
June 20, 2012

OK - I've had time to mull it over,
and to compare with a lot of others. Now I don't know why it looked odd to me, other than the wings being maybe more pointed than average. The dark border is a little narrow for an Orange Sulphur, but not unusually so. So, in retrospect it just looks like an Orange Sulphur.

Moved from Sulphurs and Yellows.

This is an unusual looking specimen
Some features of pattern, and the pointed front wing hint at it being a Dogface (Zerene cesonia), but it's not. The pattern showing through from above shows a narrow forwing band more like Colias philodice. I hesitate to declare "hybrid", but who knows?

Or, it might just be an Orange Sulphur that is a bit off the average.

Moved from Butterflies (excluding skippers).
