Chaitophorus populicola
Fairfield, Somerset County, Maine, USA
June 21, 2012
all over the tops of (I think Basswood.) this is happening...almost everwhere and I was hoping to know what is happening exactly.
It seems like 3 different kinds here.
Thanks

Aphid Colony
These are aphids in the genus
Chaitophorus
being tended by ants. The aphids produce a sugary substance called honeydew as they feed on the plant's phloem. They pretty much just suck in plant sap then filter out the sugar and poop it out. The ants will defend the colony from predators so they can feed on the honeydew. The winged critters are just adult alates (alate means "has wings") and then the smaller red ones are nymphs, but they're both aphids.
