Large Carpenter Bee - Xylocopa sonorina
San Pedro River Valley, SE of San Manuel, Pinal County, Arizona, USA
June 21, 2012
Size: 3 cm
on a Bird of Paradise flower - fairly common on desert cactus and Creosote flowers at sunset, Sonoran desert scrub area, elev 2800 feet; I wonder if this would be Arizona Carpenter Bee (Xylocopa californica arizonensis).

Likelier to be X. varipuncta?
The brownish-amber (but quite obviously clear) wings suggest X. varipuncta rather than X. californica arizonensis, which has darker wings often with metallic tints :)
