Are there Spiny Aphids? What are these? The Treehoppers (Membracidae) family - Entylia carinata
Texas, USA
June 23, 2012
Size: 1/32" - 1/8"
Spiny looking black and white (more like clear) insects that appear to be living like aphids, on the underside of leaves. I have found two different sunflowers (Helianthus Anuus) that have these. Ants are present; but I did not witness ants collecting honeydew from the insects. A few small, green aphids are visible. The center of the photo shows some apparent damage to the stalk of the leaf; I suspect this was an egg mass. Comments from bugguide.net indicate that these are in the family Membracidae.

I believe these must be Entylia Carinata.

Treehoppers (Membracidae)
They definitely seem to be from the Treehopper family. I will try to find adults to determine if they are Publilia or Entylia genus.

Entylia carinata nymphs..??
Maybe??.... Entylia carinata nymphs, they are often attended by ants and they feed on herbaceous perennials, especially Asteraceae (sunflowers) http://bugguide.net/node/view/10205

Treehopper nymphs
Maybe Publilia concava, or something close:
