Cicada on Yucca Stalk - Hadoa townsendii

Size: ~3 inches

Found this one in the desert 17 miles north of Las Cruces. They're all over really. Calling all day long. Occasionally landing on the back of your neck and buzzing loudly and flying away when you unwittingly try to scratch your neck.

If my memory serves me correctly, this one wasn't calling and didn't fly away as readily as most of the other cicadas (which look quite similar) I have noticed, leading me to believe it was a female.

Looks like Tibicen townsendii (?)

There has been some discussion concerning T. townsendii and the similar T. bifidus and T. simplex (the latter of which both possess a broken medial pruinose stripe down the dorsum of the abdomen).

This cicada looks strikingly like Tibicen townsendii Uhler 1905 (also seen spelled T. townsendi) on-line - Please compare to T. townsendii in this image (NOTE: pinned specimen is lacking some of its original pruinosity).

NOTE: T. bifidus is described as having a broken white dorsal stripe running the length of the abdomen. A trait NOT seen in the cicada above.

+ it was confirmed by severa sources that Tibicen townsendii was abundant this year in NM!
