How I make my pitfall traps

How I make my pitfall traps
Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, USA
I stab the scissors into the bottom half of the Gatorade bottle and snip up to the raised ring or band separating the neck from the bottom half, carefully cutting just past its highest raised diameter to produce a clear plastic funnel that fits inside the MacDonalds cups. Its mouth will admit most good-sized beetles. It keeps the good climbers and fliers from escaping easily.

Next I cut the bottom off one MacDonalds cup and the top off the other so that they nest easily in the soil.

Finally, I remove the contents and label from the chili powder container, wash it out, and drill six or eight quarter-inch holes up close to the rim, the purpose of which is to allow bait odors to escape. (Bait can be rotting meat, dung, fermenting fruit, or grains such as rolled oats.) I cut some pieces of foam mounting tape and stick them to the lid.
