How I make my pitfall traps
Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, USA
This is a closeup of bait container mounted inside bowl.
Dig a hole, sinking the cups and refilling the soil, smoothing it flush with the top of the cups. At this point, remove the inside cup, discard any soil that got inside, replace, and drop in the clear plastic funnel. Then position three fat-cigar-sized twigs to elevate the inverted bowl, fill the bait container and place the bowl upside-down so the bait is suspended directly over the sunken cups and funnel. Find a 2-3-pound rock to place on top of the bowl to keep wind gusts and small animals from dislodging it.
The elevated bowl allows beetles and other small things (slugs, worms, millipedes, spiders, flies, sowbugs) to enter and be trapped while preventing rain and fallen litter from getting into the trap.
When you want to change baits it's nice to have an extra bait container ready to go. Just uscrew the old container and replace with the new container. The old container can be washed out later and readied for re-use.
