Dermacentor variabilis, American dog tick - Dermacentor - female

Dermacentor variabilis, American dog tick - Dermacentor - Female
Gambrills, Anne Arundel County, Maryland, USA
June 24, 2012
Size: 0.4cm
Found walking on the fur of my Labrador-Golden Retriever mix. The dog is treated monthly against fleas and ticks with Vectra®. Due to his exceptionally thick fur we inspect him frequently for ticks and have never before found one.

Moved
Moved from Hard Ticks.

0.4 mm would be nearly invisible...
...perhaps you meant 0.4 cm?

Yes.
0.4cm. Just trying to see if you were paying attention.

Good point.
Completely missed that. :)

Moved for expert attention
Moved from ID Request.

Probably another species of Dermacentor
Maybe the American Dog Tick (Dermacentor variabilis):

Others may be able to say for sure.

More Likely
Dog tick is more likely. I did not see the photo that you posted or one closely resembling it while researching ticks, even though I (obviously) first assumed that this was a garden-variety dog tick. Thanks.
