Size: approx 1 inch
It is fast!!! It was hard to get it still long enough to take the picture, but I finally got one and then let it on its way. It almost looks like some sort of wasp without wings.

Most definitely velvet ant
Though I can't tell you which. And you're totally correct, they ARE female wasps with no wings. The males are winged, but have no sting, if I'm correct.

You're right.
Also right that males don't have a sting. The sting is a modified ovipositor, so only females have it.
