admirals
without a view of the underside i was guessing by the large group of similar individuals that this one was with and the number and location of both species of admirals in this part of Montana. How can we differentiate? I appreciate your help. i also compared with image #206719

you may well be right ;)
You may well be right and a ventral view necessary. Additionally, there could be more overlap in traits than I have seen in specimens and images posted.
My stab at id was based on the reduced amount of white on the forewings towards the tips and margins. I think of Weidemeyer's Admiral as typically having more white dots or markings (?).
Weidemeyer's Admiral
Your image also seems to have more blue on the hindwings and along the periphery of the forewings suggestive of Limenitis arthemis rubrofasciata.
