Found under stepping stone, early afternoon. No web. Dark black with red hour glass on abdomen. Very active. Appears to be adult female black widow.

I have no doubt that your assumption is correct. what a beautiful spider!

Female black widow. Maybe Latrodectus mactans? The range overlaps with L. variolus and both are found in South Carolina, but according to the info pages, the hourglass for L. variolus is broken in the middle. Looks complete here, so L. mactans is my guess.

We'll see what the experts have to say.
