I think these were feeding on ash...initial ID was way off.

These are actually moth caterpillars, genus
Callosamia
. Probably
Callosamia promethea
, but there are a few other species it could be. Their foodplant might be able to tell you which they are. Great photo!

Definitely not Black Swallowtail caterpillars
- I think the hairy warts and general shape rule that out, though the coloring is similar. Do you know what they were eating? Size? I would guess they are moth larvae, but I can't get you any further than that, I'm afraid.
