Peigler's Oakworm Moth - Anisota peigleri

Peigler's Oakworm Moth - Anisota peigleri
Durham County, North Carolina, USA
August 28, 2004
Again plaguing my neighborhood. Their last big year was 2000, I believe. I'm capturing a bunch this fall and giving them some nice clean soil and leaves in which to pupate. I'm hoping to get some good photos of the adults next July, so stay tuned.

This caterpillar looks slightly different than the previous one posted. It has shorter fleshy filaments, and slightly more orangish stripes.

I don't know if this is just variability or a "species" difference. The complex of A. peigleri/senatoria is apparently very difficult to sort out, and there is disagreement among the experts. This sort of situation perhaps deserves a guide with some notation in the species field, such as "senatoria complex". I tried to handle that in the individual guides, in the identification and remarks sections. Anybody have any preferences?
