Yes. I just photographed one of these in Maine a week or so ago. I thought the 'bald' patch was because it was dying, but yours looks just as bald and twice as alive.

 
i think he is old
because a lot of scales are missing near the fringes of the wings, as well. on the other hand, the colors are still pretty good. he has aged gracefully!
