White and pale gray fly with black at wing tips - Trupanea bisetosa - female

White and pale gray fly with black at wing tips - Trupanea bisetosa - Female
Santa Cruz, Santa Fe County, New Mexico, USA
July 8, 2012
Size: 3-4 mm?
These were on my friend's sunflowers, some on the leaves, often crawling fast or flying, others resting at the center of a bud like this one. I have no clue even on the family.

Drastically sharpened, like the next picture, in the hope of a glimpse of a wing vein.

My friend and I, looking at the pattern on the left wing in a smaller image on the camera screen, wondered whether it was another insect. Could it possibly trick predators into attacking the "insect" on the wing and sparing the body?

Moved
Moved from Trupanea.

I can't see the abdomen, but the wing pattern only fits the females. (doesn't fit the males)
Part of the right wing apex is damaged. (torn off) Also, the other shots are somewhat blurry. So, I un-checked the representative boxes.

Thank you
for the ID, including sex, and the move.
