Alate from Houston - Atta texana - male

Alate from Houston - Atta texana - Male
Houston., Harris County, Texas, USA
June 6, 2012
My friend visited family in Houston and brought me back these photos. I don't know why ant identification is so difficult for me...anyway, I identified it as an ant, so that's a start.

Atta texana - male reproductive
The difference between the very (one could almost say ridiculously) small head and the large humpbacked "thorax" is distinctive vs the males of the closely related genus Acromyrmex (where this disproportion also exists, but not so strongly).
Atta- leafcutting ants reproductive are the largest of their tribe, too.

Thanks!
That's very cool. My friend wasn't even sure it was an ant, because the tiny head looked so bizarre to him.
