Xanthorhoe abrasaria

Xanthorhoe abrasaria
Bull of the Woods Trail, Taos Ski Valley, Carson NF, Taos County, New Mexico, USA
July 12, 2012
Size: 20-30 mm?
Rotated 180 degrees.

Yes, the images are small, and I can't even tell whether it's a butterfly or a moth, but how often do they cooperate so well in giving views of both sides?

Spruce-fir forest around 10,000 ft (3,000 m). The flower is, uh, some yellow composite. :-)

Thanks
for settling it.

Thanks.
Interesting.

Looks like Triphosa haesitata?
At least, more like it than anything else I saw at the MPG page. But I can't tell whether the hindwing is toothed enough (and maybe there are other possibilities). Also, MPG doesn't show it from NM, AZ, UT, CO, or TX.

No ...
It's not Triphosa. It looks to be one of the Xanthorhoe. In fact, it's quite a good match for the variable Xanthorhoe abrasaria, but I don't know if those are present that far south.

Interesting
Wonder how I missed that one. Maybe I'll get lucky and get a better picture of one of these again.
