What is it?

I have no idea what created this. It seems too big to be insect related, but when I think about some of the termite mounds in Africa, I'm not so sure. :-) It surrounded a hole dug (drilled?) into what is now (because of drought conditions) the dry, clay bank of a creek. Exterior measures about 6 in. at the base, tapering to about 4 in. at the top. About 3.5 in. in height. Part of it had broken off and clay debris was inside it, as well as in the hole it surrounded. I assumed it was abandoned. If it's likely not to be abandoned, I'll quickly put it back. Thank you for any information you can give me.

Thanks for your help, much appreciated. Crayfish never occurred to me at all. This is completely the wrong site for crayfish stuff! I'll frass the image.
