Hayhurst's Scallopwing, Common Sootywing, or a hybrid? - Staphylus hayhurstii - Male
Bryan Park, Richmond, Virginia, USA
July 15, 2012
I have shown this photo to several other people and gotten no consensus. It looks like a Hayhurst's Scallopwing except for one thing - the white marks on the corners of the forewings: There are too many for a Hayhurst's (should only be two together). In every other regard, it resembles but that it resembles a Hayhurst's. I've looked at Common Sootywings and they generally don't have that few, plus the wings don't have the striped pattern seen in this photo. The head does resemble a Sootywing, in that it has some white on it, but so s\does Hayhurst's in some pictures I've seen. Is it possible this is a hybrid between the two, or just an aberrant Hayhurst's that has more spots than most? It also has the white speckles all over it (if you look closely) that you see on some Hayhurst's, as well. Any ideas?

Staphylus hayhurstii - The number of white spots is normal,
but they are larger than usual.
