Now many species?
How many species are there in the continental USA?

Two
One all up and down the east coast and as far west as Iowa (elegans) and one that is likely an infrequent incidental in Louisiana and Mississippi from the Caribbean (stonei). I suspect that pretty much everything that is on bugguide can be placed as elegans for now. Of course this group hasn't been revised in North America so it is possible that there are new species waiting to be described!

Two color patterns
In addition to the common color pattern here, we have two with a more complicated pattern on the abdomen. Is that a sexual difference?

Hard to say
Without a series of specimens from across the range it is hard to say whether this colour pattern is linked to sex or is suggestive of a new species or not. Colour pattern/extent of dark spots, often varies across the range in Mycetophilids typically north to south. Looks like another group to add to the list of mycetophiloids to revise :)
