Moth With Metallic Gold Markings On Wings - Autographa ampla Mission (49.1337° N, 122.3112° W if that's a help), British Columbia, Canada June 27, 2012 Size: approx. 2.5 cm (1 inch)
Found this moth outside on a sunny day in the early afternoon. Have never seen this specimen before. I would've remembered seeing it as I found the metallic gold marking on its wings quite beautiful. Not just a bright streak of metallic gold but at certain angles, a golden glimmer can be seen on more of the wing but not in a specific pattern. I tried to take more photos of it (had to move it carefully on my garden knee pad out of bright sun) but it flew off. Not a strong flyer but what I'd say was average flight for most moths. It has a larger tuft of hairs like a hump just behind the head with a smaller hump behind the larger one as can be seen particularly in one photo. I went through the moths families, subfamilies, tribes & more & still couldn't narrow it down.
