Casebearer on Dogwood - Coleophora cornella

Casebearer on Dogwood - Coleophora cornella
Cross Plains, Dane County, Wisconsin, USA
May 30, 2012
I collected several of these casebearers in late May. A moth finally emerged on July 17. There were several cases in the container and I lost track of some of them in the meantime with replenishing the leaves for the casebearers. I can only assume that the moth that emerged, did in fact emerge from one of the cases although the one case that I did find in the container did not show any visible signs of being opened. I still have another container with a case in it, so if a similar moth emerges, I'll be more comfortable with the results.

I tried to rear these this year but nothing has emerged (so far). However, I did rear casebearers from birch, alder, hophornbeam, and cinquefoil, and none of the cases looked any different after the moths had emerged.

Coleophora cornella
Thanks for the confirmation on this moth. It's strange how they emerge without showing any sign of emergence on the case.
