My son found this crossing the road and wanted to know what it is. I found a lot of close brushfoots, but in the end could not id it.

I would go with Polygonia interrogationis.
Question mark looks like a close match:

I'm not a professional by no means however this does seem to show some resemblance to the baltimore checkerspot caterpillar though coloration is different wish i could help out though there is plenty of folks who could probably better assist you with this on here
