An Abundance of Queens - Danaus gilippus - Male Female
Falcon State Park , Starr County, Texas, USA
October 18, 2007
Queens (mostly males) massing on Gregg's Mistflower - Conoclinium [=Eupatorium] greggii (Asteraceae).
Mistflowers provide a chemical that male Queens need in order to manufacture their courtship pheromones.
Similar aggregations of Queens can be found wherever large patches of this plant grows.
