Cricket in Phoenix, in the Sonoran Desert of Squaw Peak Park - Platyoplus gilaensis - female

Cricket in Phoenix, in the Sonoran Desert of Squaw Peak Park - Platyoplus gilaensis - Female
Phoenix, Squaw Peak Park, Maricopa County, Arizona, USA
July 22, 2012
Size: 1 3/4" approx
It looks like a cricket, but it is very different than the crickets
that I see around the house.

Size and measurements fit this species,
and, except for the ovipositor, it looks exactly like the male photographed in the original description of the species.

Moved from Shield-backed Katydids.

This is a female Shield-back Katydid
She appears to be adult, and my best guess is that she is Ateloplus coconino; however, I am not sure. She looks a great deal like the allotype specimen of the species [shown here at 'Singing Insects of America'], but I don't know how to be certain.

Moved from Grasshoppers, Crickets, Katydids.
