Yellowjacket mimic? - Meromacrus acutus

Yellowjacket mimic? - Meromacrus acutus
Summerville, Dorchester County, South Carolina, USA
July 23, 2012
Size: ~15mm
What I thought was a yellowjacket flew in the house today, I caught it with the trusty Bugzooka, and as an experiment, popped it in the freezer for a few minutes while I set up the camera. Once the condensation and frost went away, I still had plenty of time for shooting before it became mobile enough to leave. So I guess it is some kind of mimic, but in my limited searching I didn't come across any strong matches, which typically means I'm "barking up the wrong tree". I'm hoping somebody can point me towards the right one! Thanks!

We have a winner
I think we have a winner there, John, thanks for the ID! And sure enough, I was barking up the wrong branch of the taxonomic tree.
