Odd Bugs -
Ululodes
Wildcat Ridge WMA, Morris County, New Jersey, USA
July 29, 2006
An odd scene on a dead plant stem. I assume the stalky things at the bottom are eggs, and the white things are cocoons, but I have never seen anything like this before.

#67899 Identification -- Ululodes sp.
This is a group of abortive eggs (club-shaped "repagula"), fertile eggs (white) and recently-hatched first instar larvae of an owlfly of the genus Ululodes. Two Ululodes species are currently recorded from New Jersey, quadripunctatus and macleayanus, and it could be either of these.

Thanks a lot
Pretty neat bugs, a bit like prickly antlions. So, if the comments on the other set of owlfly pics are correct, the little brown things are infertile eggs laid as food for the young?

Ascalaphidae
Awesome! These are Neuroptera larvae. They are related to the antlions and belong to the family Ascalaphidae or Owlflies. Cool pics!
