Groundcherry Sun Moth caterpillar in chinese lantern - Chloridea subflexa

Groundcherry Sun Moth caterpillar in chinese lantern - Chloridea subflexa
Sherburne WMA, St. Martin Parish, Louisiana, USA
July 16, 2012
Size: 1.5 to 2 cm
I collected a few branches from a large clump of Chinese lantern plants - there were a lot of cool beetles but I wasn't able to photograph them very well in situ so I wanted to rear some at home. Instead, I found this handsome caterpillar inside one of the lanterns. It has matured since I collected it, and so there are some photos of a later instar caterpillar in this series.

My ID is based on locale, hostplant, and Wagner's Owlet Caterpillars of North America.
