Ocypus olens
Escondido, San Diego County, California, USA

This large black insect was under a paver in a dark, damp area of the yard. There were a couple Earwigs with eggs next to it.

This species was accidentally
This species was accidentally introduced from Europe, probably through commercial trade (in potting soil etc.). It appears to do a good job controlling the snails though, even though that was not the intention!
