Eastern Least Clubtail - Stylogomphus albistylus - female

Eastern Least Clubtail - Stylogomphus albistylus - Female
Radford, Virginia, USA
July 25, 2012
I'd like an Id, please. This critter was smaller than most dragonflies I see.

Clubtails
If you spot anything similar in the future, the space between the eyes is diagnostic of clubtails (family Gomphidae)--other dragonflies have eyes that meet on the top of the head. So that helps narrow things down.

Thanks,
Melissa, I appreciate knowing that. I see what you mean, too.
Of course, I usually just feel fortunate to get a reasonably sharp image before the critter goes on its way:>)

Me, too!
I do a lot of ID from photographs when I get home. :-) But some species are considerably less cooperative than others...

Dragonfly?
Either Eastern Least or Interior Least Clubtail, female. You apparently need to see the subgenital plate to distinguish between the two.

How very interesting!
Thanks, DeeDee for that info and ID!
