I have seen this bug only a couple of times in the past few months, but was concerned what it is.

Moved from ID Request. A predatory beetle, not harmful. (I cropped your image some to make it more visible)

This is a good find, may be a new state record.

Concur in unpublished range extension to north
for eastern United States with this North Carolina record. This introduced species was already known from WA in western USA. Thanks Brad for the notice.
