This large (approx 3/4") robber fly was on the same boulder as the male. Big thanks to Dr. H. Raney for his help in identifying them.

Yes, I think these two are the Cyrtopogon auratus females.

Thank you!I tried using the descriptions in Melander(1923)and couldn't confidently separate the female auratus from aurifex. Would you be able to share how were able to ID the female?

The females of these two spec
The females of these two species are very similar (especially in photographs). Only C. auratus is known from Utah -- as this species ranges a little further south and east than does aurifex (a species limited to the NW US & adjacent Canada).
