Dynastes tityus, I think - Xyloryctes jamaicensis -

I believe this is a male Dynastes tityus. I put together a portable mercury vapor light yesterday and this guy showed up within 30 minutes of turning it on for the first time.

Upper horn?

Dynastes tityus would have an upper horn as well as a lower one. Also, 40 mm would be the lowest end for length of a D. tityus.

Xylorectes or Strategus, most likely. Do the elytra have striations?

I hate it

when I make stupid goofs. I swear I had identified this beetle as a Xyloryctes jamaicensis (I even named the photo that,) but I had posted an image of a female Dynastes tityus right before I posted this one and I, of course, pasted the wrong species in this one. D'oh! That's my story and I'm sticking to it! :) Thanks Steve.

Oh, yes, the elytra do have striations.

Believability

That has the ring of truth to it, so I believe you! The dark female tityus was another nice find, as this one is a nice find too.
