While looking for newly hatched Monarch caterpillars I found this. Since this was so immobile and I couldn't find the cats, I though it was dead after eating a small caterpillar. I tried to pick it up, and it moved. It sat at the very top of a broken milkweed plant all day. I'm too new to this to even know if it is a spider or something else. Any ideas? Thanks.

Spider
This is actually a spider. An orb weaver in the family Araneidae. Maybe genus Neoscona - it looks an awful lot like this to me:

Outstanding. Thank you k. Looks like a perfect match to this untrained eye. Guess I was focusing on the wrong end. Your photo clearly shows the eyes.

Love your photos on Flikr.

This site is great. Can't wait for the day I too can identify something for a newbie.

Thanks again,
Hal

I agree
BugGuide is wonderful, largely thanks to its superb community!

Sorry if I misunderstand - the photo I linked to above was actually taken by Mary Keim, not me. We often link to other images in the guide when suggesting possible IDs, for comparison.
