Short abdomen fly laying eggs - Goniops chrysocoma - female

Short abdomen fly laying eggs - Goniops chrysocoma - Female
Mountain Lake, Giles County, Virginia, USA
July 29, 2012
Size: ~2 cm
Found on the back of the leaf of a red maple sapling in a predominately northern red oak forest. Elevation there is 3800 ft, so it is much cooler than the region in general. I found her because she kept making these kazoo-like buzzing noises every time I came near her tree, while I was taking data on vegetation composition. If you need pics from other angles for id, I can post/send.

Looks like...
Goniops chrysocoma to me. But I don't work in the tabanids very often anymore.

Thanks!
That seems to match other pictures I found on the internet. Cool -- I looked up the species, and couldn't find a whole lot of info on it specifically. One bugguide post (http://bugguide.net/node/view/531610) mentioned that this fly does not suck blood like many horse flies do. Is this true? Thanks!
