unknown...what? beetle? stink bug family? - Corythucha arcuata
Kenora, Ontario, Canada
January 8, 2012
Size: 3mm
I tried to identify this on Bug Guide but couldn't even find a general family with which to start! There were several of them, on oak leaves, near clusters of eggs which appear to be black aphids of some type.

Wrong date?
There shouldn't be green oak leaves outdoors in Kenora in January.
Did you mean July 8?

Good info, but a little more could aid in ID
Host plant, in this case oak, can be very important.

You saw several. Did they all appear to be adults, like this one? (Juveniles are smaller and less, uh, lacy.)

Do you have a photo from the side, showing the hood?

We have a very good expert on lace bugs, and you might get an ID to species, if not now, later.

Corythucha, perhaps, but I doubt it's C. morrilli. It doesn't look quite right to me--and none of the representatives in the guide have come from your neck of the woods (see map).

Corythucha arcuata
This is C. arcuata. It feeds on oak trees. Thanks for that information. The apical band of the wing most of the time is not very defined, sometimes is only a trace. Hood not too high. It occurs in Canada. C. morrilli has several crossed bands on the wings, hood is elevated, and like you said it does not occur in Canada.

I agree, Ken...I had difficulty fitting a lot of the information into what I wanted it to say. There were a lot of Florida reports. I'm not sophisticated enough in my own bug world to care much about differentiating the details, just get the family and be comfortable that it's not a threat to any of my favourite butterflies and moths.

Found it!
Lace Bug - Corythucha morrilli. After searching pages of photos, there it was! Sorry to bother you guys.

You're quick!
Thanks....
