beetle
a common click beetle. turn them over on their back and you will quickly see how they got their name! CLICK....FLIP! Look at the 2 tiny projections on the rear edges of the thorax.

Thanks, Jay!
You know, I knew these (and others I've seen) are called click beetles, and I even knew that it had something to do with what happens when they flip themselves upright. But I never noticed those projections you point out. Thanks for directing my attention there; it's amazing how much more you can see when someone points out what to look for.
