Unknown Hymenoptera - Anthidium manicatum - Female
Salt Lake City , Salt Lake County, Utah, USA

Size: Less than 1"
I found this collecting hairs from the stem of a globe thistle. It worked collecting its little ball of fluff for a few minutes and unfortunately flew off with its treasure just as I was trying to reposition for a side shot. Having not seen this particular bee/wasp and this behavior before I am intrigued. Thanks for any leads, I know it isn't the greatest identifying shot.

I can't tell from your photo
I can't tell from your photo but from the described activity I think of Anthidium manicatum (european wool carder bee). See http://bugguide.net/node/view/7744

Thank you!
Thanks, fascinating!

not an expert
but will throw in a guess of a type of sand wasp...
