Nice picture of an incipient (young) colony of this abundant eastern carpenter ant species. It is likely the queen reared all the rest after flying, mating and building a small nest (under bark?) back in May. Her abdomen appears quite depleted of fat stores she would have had when she left her parent colony, visible in this specimen:
