This was zooming around in the duff and was much bigger than we expected. It was probably an inch in length. We're assuming this is a female, is that correct? Is this Dasymutilla occidentalis? gathering_2012

Please,how can you tell this is not a male (other than its not having wings)? Thought the female much smaller than male but hard to tell in singles photos.
