'Coptostethus' americanus - Floridelater americanus - male

'Coptostethus' americanus - Floridelater americanus - Male
Horn Island, Jackson County, Mississippi, USA
Size: 4.0 mm
This species was described by Horn (1871) as Coptostethus americanus. At the time, Horn seemed hesitant for this generic placement but felt it the best choice at the time. Johnson (2001) transfered this species to the genus Negastrius (where it technically currently sits). Douglas (2011) performed phylogenetic analysis of the Elateridae, with special reference to Cardiophorinae, and demostrated this species belongs in Cardiophorinae. A genus is currently being described to accommodate this species (Douglas, pers. comm 2012).

Please leave the image here until such genus is published. Please do not create gen. nov or temporary pages for this species. If the images must be moved, please place them in Negastrius americanus, but please note that name will probably be obsolete in the next year.
