Another Neriene? - Neriene digna - male

Another Neriene? - Neriene digna - Male
Cowichan Valley, British Columbia, Canada
August 9, 2012
Size: ~6-7mm body length
Found and photographed in his web on a young cedar. These spiders are extremely abundant in the forest just behind the yard. This guy caught my attention because his web was in a nice location to get a bunch of different angles without disturbing him. I also noticed that these spiders seem to build "two story" webs. Two sheets on top of one another, and usually they hang out on the underside of the upper one.

I think this is a sub-adult male Neriene digna based on images in the guide, and Rod Crawford's comment about the dorsal/ventral abdomen coloration being characteristic on the female I found before, assuming it applies to juvenile males as well. Given the similarity of this guy's coloration to females of N. digna, I think it's possible.

Moved to N. digna
Moved from Spiders. Yes, great shots & ID.

N. digna
It's interesting how different the juvenile males look from the adults, which seem to be ant mimics.

Yes juvenile males
often look like adult females. This seems to be pretty common in spiders, but it's really evident in this species and in P. dispar where the adult male has a drastic change in its final molt.
