Pensacola, Escambia County, Florida, USA
August 7, 2012
These fat blue-black bees were visiting flowers along the Wet Prairie Trail in the Tarkiln Bayou Preserve State Park. The general aspect reminded me of a carpenter bee, and I wondered if it might be the Southern Carpenter Bee, Xylocopa micans. Any information will be greatly appreciated!

Several of these bees were in the same general area, and I think I have the photos correctly sorted into individuals. Here is another seen at the same time:

Thanks!
Thanks for the confirmation! This seems to be a common bee in the southeast, but this is the first report in Escambia County for BugGuide. In fact, this is only the second bee of any sort reported for this county. I will keep trying to add more as I get the opportunity.
