Sawfly Larva...
I was stumped by these guys the first time I saw them too. They are larva of the Sawfly, a stingless relatives of bees. They feed like caterpillars and look like them too. This may be the Elm Sawfly, which also feeds on other tree specise. When mature and ready to pupate, they can turn a bright peach pink.
