Red-lined Carrion Beetle - Necrodes surinamensis - male

Red-lined Carrion Beetle - Necrodes surinamensis - Male
Durham County, North Carolina, USA
May 30, 2004
Found at a light, chilled and posed. This individual has an abdomen that projects out from under the elytra. I've seen that in other carrion beetles. I wonder if it is a sex difference?

The expanded hind femur with a tooth indicates this is a male. (1) Perhaps the projecting abdomen is a characteristic of males.
